What are Intellectual Disabilities?Intellectul disabilities are a significant subaverage general intellectual functioning, existing concurrently with deficits in adaptive behavior and manifesting during the development period, that adversely affects child's education performance.

■ Significant limitations in adaptive behaviors such as : Self-care, Socializing , Communicating
■ Slow learners ■ Often fail to notice relevant features of what is being taught. ■ Do not demonstrate learned skills spontaneously ■ Difficulty learning complex skills and abstract concepts ■ Difficulties with memory |
Identification |
For students with mid intellectual disabilities: – Initial identification often occurs during preschool when the child’s rate of development in cognitive, language, and motor skills is not usual.
■ For students with all but mid intellectual disabilities: – Initial identification is usually a medical diagnosis made at birth or shortly after ■ Other identification procedures are: – Standardize assessments such as the Wechsler Intelligence Scale-IV – The use of adaptive behavior scales such as: ■ AAMR Adaptive behavior scale ■ DABS- Diagnostic Adaptive Behavior Scale |
